The Orchard School Kindergarten is a dynamic program whose curriculum
is driven by both the teachers and the childrens ideas. One activity we
do repeat annually is the Bakery. The children earn money to buy ingredients,
either through a local bank loan of $50 or by making things to sell. They
rotate jobs of cook, seller, timer helper and banker. The banker counts
the money daily and is responsible for its safe keeping overnight. Parents
buy our baked goods (one recipe a day, alternating healthy and sweet offering)
at pick up time. Prices range from 20¢ to 50¢ .We usually earn
over $200 for 15 days of operation. The children recieve a $5 paycheck and
the rest of the money is spent on new materials for their classroom which
they select as a group. This is a meaningful introduction to money, economics
and what it is like to have a job.
